Podcast Interview on ‘Contesting Europe’
In December 2017, two members of the LBI, Isabella Walser-Bürgler and Clementina Marsico, co-organised an international and interdisciplinary conference on ‘Early Modern Discourses: Representations of Community and Identity (1450–1750)’ together with their colleague Nicolas Detering from the University of Bern (some conference highlights are documented here).
The outcome of the conference was published in 2019 in Brill’s renowned series ‘Intersections’. The volume entitled Contesting Europe: Comparative Perspectives on Early Modern Discourses on Europe, 1400–1800, features contributions by some of the leading experts working on early modern concepts of Europe in various fields such as Neo-Latin studies, early modern history, art history, cartographic history, German literature or Italian literature (more information on the book is available on the publisher’s website).
Two of the editors, Isabella Walser-Bürgler and Nicolas Detering, have recently given an interview on the volume for the ‘Intellectual History’-channel by the New Books Network, a scholarly high-standing consortium providing author-interview podcasts. In their podcast interview, Walser-Bürgler and Detering not only offer personal insights into how the idea for the organisation of their conference on Europe gradually took shape, but they also discuss several major chapters of their volume and highlight some general research questions regarding the formation of early modern Europe.
