Evaluation of LBI and Saint Wolfgang project

Like every LBI, the LBI for Neo-Latin Studies had an interim review in its fourth year.

The international panel in charge of this review, held on 6th/7th February 2014, consisted of Dr. Jaqueline Glomski (King’s College London), Prof. Dr. Marc Laureys (University of Bonn), Prof. Nicholas Mann (University of London – School of Advanced Study), and Dr. Verena Kremling, Leibniz-Gemeinschaft, Berlin (Reporter). It attested the LBI excellent work and outstanding influence in the research field.

To present the successful review to a larger public, the LBI for Neo-Latin Studies joined forces with two of its sister institutes which were founded at about the same time and which have also been successfully reviewed: the LBI for  Archaeological Prospection Virtual Archaeology and the LBI for Lung Vascular Research. The idea was to bring together the competences of all three LBIs in a project led by the LBI for Archaeological Prospection and dealing with the recent excavation of a hermitage on the Falkenstein near St. Wolfgang, Austria. In the late Middle Ages and the 17th century, St. Wolfgang and the Falkenstein was one of the great European places of pilgrimage. While the LBI for Archaeological Prospection did the excavations and the digital reconstruction, the LBI for Neolatin Studies contributed historical Latin texts and contexts, and the LBI for Lung Vascular Research interpreted the traces of mercury found in the hermitage as syphilis medication. The results of the reviews and the work on the project were presented in a press conference held on 3rd July 2014. Please find a short clip here and a selection of the press coverage below.
