Isabella Walser’s edition of Anton Wilhelm Ertl’s ‘Austriana Regina Arabiae’

In 1687, the jurist Anton Wilhelm Ertl published the Neo-Latin romance Austriana regina Arabiae.

The novel constitutes an allegorical treatment of the events surrounding the second Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, propagating the supranational unity of the the Habsburg Empire. The work marked the birth of the Neo-Latin Habsburg novel. This edition presents the text with a German translation and a substantial introduction into the Neo-Latin (Habsburg) novel in general and Ertl’s Austriana in particular.
