Neo-Latin Poetry Slam

On April 28th 2012, the "Tiroler Nacht der Forschung, Bildung und Innovation" (Tyrolean Night for Research, Education and Innovation) was held in Innsbruck.

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies contributed the world's first Neo-Latin Poetry Slam to this interdisciplinary event.

Eight participants, among them professional "slammers" and students from the Latin Department of Innsbruck University, performed their poems based on various Neo-Latin texts.

About the enormous importance of Neo-Latin literature

In an interview given to the OST Bridges Magazin (the Online Magazine on Transatlantic Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy, published quarterly by the Office of Science & Technology (OST) at the Austrian Embassy in Washington, DC), the Austrian Federal Minister for Science and Research, Karlheinz Töchterle points out "Neo-Latin studies as an example of a prominent field of research in the Humanities” in Austria (vol. 33, May 2012).

'Burckhardt's Renaissance, 150 Years Later'

The LBI is pleased to announce the launch of 'Burckhardt's Renaissance, 150 Years Later', a collection of essays edited by LBI Junior Researcher Oren Margolis, now available online. These papers originated in a conference held in Oxford to mark the 150th anniversary of The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy by Jacob Burckhardt, and together they provide a fresh and often challenging look at a classic work:

Visit to Washington, D.C.

A delegation from the LBI for Neo-Latin Studies visited Washington, D.C. from 21st to 26th of March 2012 in order to participate at the RSA-Conference (Renaissance Society of America).

Besides the official conference programme, they were able to visit the “Austrian Cultural Forum Washington” where they were warmly welcomed by its director, Andrea Schrammel.

"Train the Trainer"

On Wednesday 11th of January 2012, the members of the “Qualifizierungsprogramm Train the Trainer”, organized by the Lower Austrian university of education, visited the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo Latin Studies. Our guests are going to be responsible for the implementation of the new school leaving examination in Latin, in which Neo Latin texts will play an important role in the future.

Visit of Mag. Cortolezis-Schlager

On December 21st 2011, Mag. Katharina Cortolezis-Schlager, member of the Austrian National Council and of the science committee, visited our Institute.

A presentation of the LBI was followed by a discussion about the Institute's programme, Neo-Latin as discipline as well as recent scientific developments in the Ludwig Boltzmann Society.
