LBI Visiting Fellowship of Jean-François Cottier

Jean-François Cottier, Professor for Latin Language and Literature at Université Paris Diderot – Paris VII, is visiting the Institute for two weeks to collaborate with William Barton on the translation of Justus Pascasius’ De Alea (1561).

The text, the first treatise ever dedicated entirely to the subject of gambling, has emerged as a critical document for the understanding of gaming and the history of gambling addiction in the late Renaissance and early modern period. Barton and Cottier’s collaboration will produce the first English translation of the piece and aims to make this important and interesting document accessible to a broader audience of readers who are not specialists in Neo-Latin literature.
