Former staff member at the LBI, Dr. Stefan Zathammer, was granted a research project on “Scanderbegus Latinus: The Figure of Skanderbeg in Early Modern Latin Literature” by the FWF in October 2023. We congratulate him warmly on this! While the figure of Skanderbeg is regarded today as an Albanian national hero, he appears quite differently in Neo-Latin texts of the early modern period: as a pan-European hero fighting against the Ottomans and as a Christian hero. The FWF project is dedicated to this early stage of Skanderbeg’s reception. It is also part of the LBI continuation concept: in order to maintain the staffing level of the LBI at the successor institute, we have promised to increasingly apply for third-party funding. Stefan Zathammer’s beautiful success is part of this effort.
