Despite its enormous extent and significance, Neo-Latin literature, i.e. the Latin literature written from the Renaissance to the present day, is little studied and poorly represented in academic institutions. The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies (LBI) intends to make up for this shortcoming by its exclusive dedication to Neo-Latin literature (with a focus on the 16th to the 18th centuries) and by a fresh approach: many studies have tended to look at Neo-Latin from the perspective of other disciplines such as classics, history, or the modern languages, which has cemented a misconception of the inferior nature and backward orientation of Neo-Latin literature. The LBI, by contrast, programmatically focuses on those aspects of Neo-Latin literature which can be understood as a dynamic element of early modern culture and which have made a significant contribution to the emergence of Europe as we know it today.
From April 26th to 28th 2012, three delegates from the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies, G. Almási, W. Barton, I. Walser, contributed to the conference SCIENTIAE: Disciplines of Knowing in the Early-Modern World, held in Vancouver, Canada.
This interdisciplinary conference, the first in a very promising series, brought together scholars researching all the many and varied facets of the Scientific Revolution into a single forum, an event still rather uncommon despite the broadening of approaches to investigating this early modern phenomenon in recent years.
On April 28th 2012, the "Tiroler Nacht der Forschung, Bildung und Innovation" (Tyrolean Night for Research, Education and Innovation) was held in Innsbruck.
The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies contributed the first Neo-Latin Poetry Slam in the world to this interdisciplinary event.
Eight participants, among them professional "slammers" and also students from the Latin Department of Innsbruck University, recited their poems which were based on various Neo-Latin texts.
Attached you can find the 2011 Annual Report of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies.
The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies awards scholarships of €1000 per month to researchers at BA, MA or Postdoc level. The scholarships are for 1-6 months. Interested researchers are expected to work on a specific project from the field of Neo-Latin literature and to take residence in Innsbruck during the period of the scholarship (assistance in finding accommodation can be provided). They will take part in the activities of the Institute and discuss their work with its members.
